A day after signing No. 1 draft pick Daniel Schlereth, the Diamondbacks added sandwich pick Wade Miley of Southeastern Louisiana.
Miley, a left-hander, was 7-3 with a 3.90 ERA, and he struck out 119 in 101 2-3 innings while throwing four complete games.
The D-Backs prefer to ease college starting pitchers into their first season in the system, so it is likely Miley will be used out of the bullpen or with a limited pitch count this summer.
Miley had one start where he threw 158 pitches in the Southland Tournament, and often closed during weekend series around his starts.
He is to begin his career at Class A short-season Yakima after agreeing to a contract with a signing bonus of about $875,000.
“I’ve been sitting at home waiting for this day to come,” Miley said.
